Dining Room Lighting
Good dining room lighting starts with the pendant above the table: it turns the dining area into the heart of the room. In this collection you will find dining room light fixtures in real alabaster, travertine, walnut, marble and opal glass – from a single globe and linear pendant lights to models with three or more heads for long tables.
Dining room light fixtures: choosing the right height and size
- Hanging height: ideally, the bottom of the light hangs about 60 to 70 cm above the tabletop. Light then falls on plates and faces without anyone looking straight into it. Most models have a cable that can be shortened.
- Width: as a rule of thumb, the light spans about half to two thirds of the table length, leaving around 30 cm free on each side.
- Long tables: from a table length of about 160 cm, several heads or a linear light look more balanced than a single shade – such as the linear alabaster light BALVO in lengths up to 160 cm, or TAIKA with three travertine discs.
- Round tables: above round or square tables, a single large light or a cluster of several heads, as with BEMBI, works best.
Glare-free light for long evenings
People often sit at the dining table for hours, so the light should be glare-free. Alabaster, opal glass and travertine shades that direct light downward hide the bulb and diffuse the light softly. A color temperature of 2700 to 3000 K feels warm and makes food look appetizing. If the light is dimmable, you can switch from a bright family meal to a calm dinner atmosphere; whether a model is dimmable is stated on its product page.
Frequently asked questions
How high should a pendant light hang above a dining table?
Around 60 to 70 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the light is a good guide. With high ceilings or large shades, it can be a little more.
One large light or several small ones?
For short and round tables, one light is often enough. Long tables are lit more evenly with two or three heads or a linear pendant light.
Do I need an electrician?
Pendant lights are hardwired to the ceiling. Have a qualified electrician install them; dimensions and bulbs are listed on every product page.
