The travertine wall sconce SHIWU reinterprets the classic reading light in the spirit of Wabi-Sabi – its silhouette recalls a small mushroom.
Design and materials
A half-round dome of untreated travertine sits at the end of a curved metal arm with a dark bronze look. The arm grows from a round base of solid brown wood. The open pores of the stone and the fibers of the wood form a lively contrast with the smooth metal. The integrated LED light stays concentrated beneath the dome and makes its rim glow warmly. A touch switch turns the light on and off. The pores and tone of the travertine vary from piece to piece. The light is intended as mood lighting and suits smaller zones such as a bedside, a reading corner or an alcove, rather than serving as a room’s main light.
